The exhibition The Dark Chamber is the first collaboration between artist / photographer Julia Solis and painter Charlotte Neel Ritto. On view at Galleri under Svanen (Roskilde, Denmark) from January 24 - February 21, 2026

The Dark Chamber combines paintings and photography to explore shapeshifting interior spaces in search of places for connection. Taking the eponymous dream journal by the French writer George Perec as a springboard, the artists have paired their works intuitively along similarly imaginal lines. Perec’s dream descriptions focus the reader’s attention on decontextualized details without offering any orientation – it’s up to the audience to flesh out the sense that is concealed within the storyscape. At the same time, its precision personalizes the narrative and unlocks buried memories.

In the visual work presented at this show, the artists aim to capture this same sense of being abandoned outside the realm of cohesive meaning. Ritto’s paintings and Solis’s photographs have an inherent resonance, although they have been created at different times and thousands of miles apart. This embedded kinship forms a guiding line, as visual elements are layered and melted to create fragmentary stories.

In one of Perec’s dreams that serves as the point of departure, guests at a party impatiently await new arrivals, picking up binoculars to search for visitors down a straight road that extends into infinity. This exhibition too focuses on the (un)expected in a strange yet familiar environment. Impressions of personal interior spaces – houses, corridors, work areas – stand in for experiences, memories and sensations, opening a portal to meaningful stories.

Viewers are invited to join in the search for connective resonance.
